Parfums de Marly

Parfums de Marly is a French perfume house founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher, named after the Château de Marly — the country retreat Louis XV kept a few miles from Versailles. Its fragrances take their names from the thoroughbreds and figures of that court, and the house style is deliberately rich: sweet woods, amber and vanilla built for projection rather than restraint. Redolia Perfumery carries 17 Parfums de Marly fragrances at our Somerville, New Jersey boutique, priced from $370 to $550.

Who makes Parfums de Marly

Julien Sprecher founded the house in Paris in 2009 and remains its creative director. The concept he started from is a historical one: in the eighteenth century a perfumer attached to the French court would compose for the king and his circle, and the resulting scents carried the names of the royal stables. Parfums de Marly revives that naming convention — Layton, Herod, Oajan, Valero, Haltane and Eragon all read as horses from a pedigree book — and pairs it with contemporary materials. The house is owned by Advent International.

Sprecher directs; named perfumers compose. Across the fragrances we carry, Quentin Bisch is behind Delina, Delina Exclusif, Delina La Rosée, Valaya and Carlisle; Hamid Merati-Kashani composed Layton, Valero and Althâir Exclusif, and Althâir with Ilias Ermenidis; Olivier Pescheux composed Herod; Nathalie Templer composed Greenley; Jordi Fernández composed Haltane; and Shyamala Maisondieu composed Oajan.

What Parfums de Marly smells like

If you are new to the house, the thing to know is that these are loud fragrances. The signature construction is a bright, often fruity or aromatic opening over a base of vanilla, tonka, sandalwood and amber, with enough synthetic woody-amber material underneath to carry the scent several feet off the skin for eight hours or more. That is why Parfums de Marly turns up so often in conversations about “compliment getters” and why it is a poor choice for a quiet office or a hot afternoon.

Within that house style our range splits three ways. The amber and woody column — Layton, Herod, Althâir, Oajan, Haltane, Valero and Eragon — is the sweet, spicy, cold-weather side of the house. The florals — the three Delinas, the two Valayas, Athénaïs and Carlisle — are brighter and fruitier, built on rose, lychee, rhubarb and peony. Greenley and Castley are the exceptions: citrus-aromatic, considerably fresher, and the two we hand people who say everything else in the line is too much.

The Parfums de Marly fragrances we carry

Seventeen, in three concentrations. The Eau de Parfum is the standard and comes in 125 ml for most of the line and 75 ml for the florals. Exclusif is not a flanker but a higher-concentration parfum version of a fragrance already in the range, sold in 75 ml — Delina Exclusif, Valaya Exclusif and Althâir Exclusif each take the original and deepen it. The Extrait de Parfum releases, Eragon and Valero, are the densest the house makes and come in 100 ml.

  • Layton — amber floral, 125 ml, $400. The house bestseller: apple and lavender over vanilla and sandalwood.
  • Herod — woody spicy, 125 ml, $400. Cinnamon, tobacco leaf and vanilla; the most autumnal thing here.
  • Althâir — amber vanilla, 125 ml, $400. Althâir Exclusif, 75 ml, $370.
  • Oajan — amber, 125 ml, $400.
  • Haltane — woody aromatic, 125 ml, $460.
  • Carlisle — floral fruity, 125 ml, $460.
  • Greenley and Castley — citrus aromatic, 125 ml, $385 each.
  • Delina — floral, 75 ml, $410. Delina La Rosée, 75 ml, $400. Delina Exclusif, 75 ml, $430.
  • Valaya — floral fruity, 75 ml, $410. Valaya Exclusif, 75 ml, $430.
  • Athénaïs — amber floral, 75 ml, $410.
  • Eragon — amber woody Extrait, 100 ml, $550. Valero — woody aromatic Extrait, 100 ml, $550.

How to choose a Parfums de Marly perfume

Start from the weather and the room. For cold months and evenings, Layton is the safest first purchase in the line and the one most people recognise; Herod is the same register but drier and spicier, and better if you dislike apple. For warm weather, Greenley and Castley are the only two in our range that will not overwhelm a small space. On the floral side, Delina is the reference — rose, lychee and rhubarb, sweet but not syrupy — with La Rosée the lighter, dewier reading and Exclusif the deeper one.

On concentration: do not assume Extrait or Exclusif is simply “better”. A higher concentration means more of the heavy base materials and less of the bright top, so the Exclusif of a fragrance you like for its opening can read as a different scent entirely. If you already own the Eau de Parfum, try the Exclusif on skin before you trade up. And because every fragrance in this house projects hard, one spray is usually the correct number.

Try Parfums de Marly at our Somerville scent bar

We keep this house at the boutique rather than shipping it, so the whole range is on the scent bar at 92 West Main Street in Somerville, New Jersey for you to try on skin. That suits Parfums de Marly in particular: the difference between Delina and Delina Exclusif, or between Layton and Althâir, is far clearer an hour into wear than it is on a paper strip. Come in, wear two, and give them the afternoon.

Parfums de Marly questions we hear

Is Parfums de Marly niche or designer? It is usually shelved as niche — independent founding, limited distribution, higher concentrations — though it is now large enough and widely enough sold that the label is arguable. What matters more for choosing is that it is priced and built like niche and projects like nothing in a department store.

Why does everything smell a bit similar? Because the house leans on the same woody-amber base across most of the line. That consistency is the point, and it is also why trying two at once is the fastest way to find which top note you actually want.

Are they unisex? The house splits its range by tradition, but Layton, Herod and Althâir are worn widely by everyone, and Delina has plenty of male wearers. Ignore the category and judge the notes.

How long do they last? Eight hours and up on skin for the Eau de Parfum, longer for the Extraits, and longer still on fabric.
