Parfums de Marly Layton is a warm, spicy vanilla fragrance with a crisp apple and lavender opening. It is the house's best-known scent and the easiest way to understand what Parfums de Marly does: a classic barbershop structure made sweeter, rounder and much longer lasting.

The first minutes are bright. Apple, bergamot and mandarin give a juicy, slightly green freshness, and lavender adds the clean aromatic note you may know from traditional fougère colognes. Geranium, violet and jasmine sit in the middle and keep the fruit from turning sugary.

The base is where Layton earns its reputation. Vanilla, cardamom and pepper rest on sandalwood, guaiac wood and patchouli, with coumarin (the almond-and-hay note found in tonka bean) and a modern amber material adding warmth. Who Made It

Hamid Merati-Kashani is a perfumer at dsm-firmenich and the name behind much of the modern Parfums de Marly range. Layton, Althaïr, Althaïr Exclusif and Valero are all credited to him. His signature is a warm, polished base of vanilla, woods and spice that stays smooth however much volume he gives it.

Who It's For

Layton suits anyone who wants one rich, crowd-pleasing fragrance that still smells expensive. The house presents it as a masculine, but Fragrantica lists it for women and men, and the vanilla and apple make it easy for anyone to wear.

If you already like sweet, spicy designer scents and want more depth and more hours on skin, this is the natural step up. If you prefer dry woods or sharp citrus, the sweetness may be more than you want. Within the house it is fresher than Herod and less sugary than Althaïr, which makes it the most versatile of the three.

About the House

Parfums de Marly was founded in Paris in 2009 by Julien Sprecher. The house takes its name and its imagery from the royal château of Marly and from the perfumed court of Louis XV, an era when fragrance was worn lavishly and horse racing was a royal passion. That is why every bottle carries a crest of two rearing horses, and why several of the fragrances, Herod, Godolphin and Darley among them, are named after celebrated horses.
