What It Smells Like

Parfums de Marly Castley is a peppery citrus fragrance with a warm, resinous base. Launched in 2025, it is one of the house's freshest scents, but it is built to last in a way most citrus fragrances are not.

The top is bergamot and grapefruit with ginger and black pepper, so the first impression is sparkling and spicy at once. The heart adds Timut pepper, a Nepalese relative of Sichuan pepper that smells strikingly of grapefruit peel, alongside neroli and petitgrain from the bitter orange tree and a discreet rose.

The base is where it turns warm. Akigalawood is a peppery, woody material derived from patchouli; here it is joined by labdanum and benzoin, two resins with an ambery, slightly sweet depth, and a soft leather note. The effect is a citrus that dries down to something darker and more textured than you expect.

Parfums de Marly has not publicly named a perfumer for Castley, and neither Fragrantica nor Parfumo lists one. We would rather leave the credit open than guess. What can be said is that it follows the house method: a brief built around one clear idea, executed with the richness and staying power the range is known for.

Who It's For

Castley is for people who want freshness without sweetness. Fragrantica lists it as a masculine. It will appeal if you like grapefruit, pepper and clean woods, and if the vanilla-led side of the house is not for you.

Compared with Greenley it is drier and spicier, with ginger and pepper in place of green apple. It is also a good choice if you want one fragrance that can be worn to work and still has a little warmth and leather in the evening.

When to Wear It

About the House

Parfums de Marly was founded in Paris in 2009 by Julien Sprecher. The house takes its name and its imagery from the royal château of Marly and from the perfumed court of Louis XV, an era when fragrance was worn lavishly and horse racing was a royal passion. That is why every bottle carries a crest of two rearing horses, and why several of the fragrances, Herod, Godolphin and Darley among them, are named after celebrated horses.
