What it smells like

Pernoire Amoral is a dark, spicy and smoky woody fragrance with an unusual, complex opening. Key lime gives an initial flash of sharp citrus, but it is quickly joined by black tea, cardamom, cinnamon and cumin. Cardamom adds a cool, aromatic spice, cinnamon a warm sweetness, and cumin a slightly animalic, skin-like warmth. Smoked prunes bring a dark, jammy fruit with a distinct smoky edge, setting the moody tone of the whole composition.

The heart deepens with violet, iris, oud and cypriol. Violet and iris add a powdery, slightly cosmetic softness, which contrasts with the dark woodiness of oud and the earthy, smoky character of cypriol, a root material related to papyrus. This contrast between powdery florals and dark woods is what gives Amoral its distinctive, mysterious feel.

In the base, orange blossom adds a warm floral glow, amber brings resinous warmth, and sandalwood and tonka bean give a creamy, smooth finish. The drydown is warmer and softer than the opening but keeps its smoky undertone. As an extrait de parfum from Pernoire's Anima line, made at 25% concentration, Amoral has excellent longevity and a rich trail.

Who made it

Amoral was composed by Andreas Wilhelm, the Swiss perfumer credited on every fragrance in Pernoire's current range. Based in Zurich, Wilhelm trained at Givaudan and Luzi and founded his own studio, Wilhelm Perfume, in 2008. He develops Pernoire's fragrances with founders Robin Dünner and Nico Mannino.

Amoral was released in 2022. Its story is about pursuing success and personal goals free from rules and social norms. The name describes a lack of moral sense, and the bottle carries a Roman statue symbol representing power and ambition.
