Perfumes Like BDK Gris Charnel: 5 Niche Fig, Tea and Sandalwood Picks

BDK Gris Charnel, Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Aube, Essential Parfums Fig Infusion and Pernoire Amoral bottles

BDK Parfums Gris Charnel is a 2019 eau de parfum by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui built on cardamom, fig and black tea over iris, Bourbon vetiver, sandalwood and tonka bean. If you are looking for perfumes like Gris Charnel, the thread to follow is that creamy fig-and-sandalwood texture — not fig on its own. Below are five niche bottles we stock that share it, from $130 to $395.

What makes Gris Charnel smell the way it does

Three materials do most of the work. The fig is handled as a milky, green note rather than a jammy fruit. The black tea dries the whole thing out and stops it turning into a dessert. The sandalwood underneath is what people actually mean when they call it creamy. Cardamom gives the opening its lift and iris adds the powder.

Bijaoui has described her own attachment to it plainly:

"I have a special bond with Gris Charnel. It embodies for me the quintessential creamy and enveloping notes that I enjoy and love to work with."

That word — enveloping — is the useful one. Gris Charnel is not loud. It sits close after the first hour and lasts roughly six to eight hours on most skin. Anything recommended as an alternative has to behave the same way, or it misses the point of the original. A loud fig is not a substitute for a quiet one.

Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Aube — the closest overall match

This is the one we hand people who ask the question directly. Composed by Élodie Bernard, it opens on black pepper, pomegranate, pistachio and cardamom, moves through cashmeran, iris and fig, and finishes on sandalwood, ambergris, vanilla and vetiver. The shared spine with Gris Charnel is obvious once you smell them together: cardamom, fig, iris, sandalwood.

The difference is creaminess. Cashmeran and a light vanilla make Vanilla Aube rounder and warmer, where Gris Charnel keeps the tea dryness. It is also a colder-weather bottle — our own season data puts it at 95 for winter against 30 for summer, while Gris Charnel is more even across the year. One naming note, because it causes confusion: Ormonde Jayne launched this in 2025 as Vanilla Mistral and re-released the identical fragrance as Vanilla Aube in September 2026. Same juice, same 88 ml, same barcode.

Essential Parfums Fig Infusion — the closest for $130

If the fig and tea are the parts you care about, this tracks them more literally than anything else we carry. Nathalie Lorson composed it in 2022 around fig and bergamot, then fig leaf and black tea, closing on sandalwood, cedar and musk. That is the Gris Charnel skeleton with the iris and tonka removed.

What you lose is depth. Gris Charnel has a powdery middle and a sweeter drydown that make it feel more expensive, and Fig Infusion is brighter and simpler — it reads green where the BDK reads milky. It is also a warm-weather bottle, scoring 95 for spring and 80 for summer in our data against 40 for winter. At $130 for 100 ml it is the most sensible place to start if you are not sure the style is for you.

Pernoire Amoral — the darker reading

Swiss perfumer Andreas Wilhelm built this 2022 extrait on key lime, black tea, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin and smoked prunes, then violet, iris, oud and cypriol, over orange blossom, amber, sandalwood and tonka bean. The black tea, cardamom, iris, sandalwood and tonka are all shared with Gris Charnel. The oud, cumin and smoked prunes are not.

Think of it as Gris Charnel after dark. Where the BDK is powdery and clean, Amoral is smoky and a little animalic, and the extrait concentration makes it sit heavier. Buy it if you already own Gris Charnel and want the same materials pushed somewhere less polite.

Mind Games Castling — the green, saline version

Christelle Laprade opens this 2022 extrait on fig, bergamot and fleur de sel — literally a salt note — then iris, freesia and lotus, finishing on vanilla, musk, vetiver and sandalwood. The fig, iris, vetiver and sandalwood overlap squarely with Gris Charnel.

The salt is what changes it. Castling reads coastal and airy where Gris Charnel reads warm and indoor, and the fig here is the green leaf rather than the milky fruit. At $395 it is the most expensive bottle on this list and the least like the original. It is here because people who love Gris Charnel's fig often love this one too, for the opposite reason.

BDK Gris Charnel Extrait — more of the same, but darker

The obvious move if you already know you like it. Bijaoui kept the cardamom, fig and black tea opening but added cistus to the heart and vanilla, cedar and Indonesian patchouli to the base. It is denser and more resinous, and it trades some of the tea brightness for sandalwood weight. She framed the brief as magnifying the original rather than replacing it.

Our full comparison of the two concentrations goes through the differences in detail, because this is the single question we are asked most about the house.

Which one should you actually buy?

Start with Essential Parfums Fig Infusion if you have never worn this style — $130 is the cheapest honest way to find out whether milky fig suits you, and nothing is lost if it does not. Go straight to Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Aube if you already own Gris Charnel and want a second bottle for cold weather that does not feel like a repeat.

Skip Mind Games Castling if what you liked was the warmth — the salt will read as a different genre. And if you find yourself wishing Gris Charnel were heavier rather than different, the answer is the extrait and not any of the others. The rest of the house sits on our BDK Parfums collection, and the whole fig category is in the fig collection.

Frequently asked questions

What does BDK Gris Charnel smell like?

Cardamom, fig and black tea open it, iris and Bourbon vetiver sit in the middle, and it dries down on sandalwood and tonka bean. The effect is creamy and powdery rather than sweet — a fig that reads milky instead of fruity. BDK Parfums released it in 2019 and perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui composed it.

What perfume is most similar to Gris Charnel?

Of the bottles we stock, Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Aube is the closest overall: it shares the cardamom, fig and iris, then adds cashmeran and a light vanilla that make it creamier. For a closer match on the fig and black tea specifically, Essential Parfums Fig Infusion tracks the opening almost exactly at $130 for 100 ml.

Is Gris Charnel worth it?

At $290 for 100 ml it is mid-priced for niche, and it is one of the few fragrances we restock constantly. It is worth it if you want the creamy fig-and-sandalwood effect specifically. If you mostly want fig and tea, Fig Infusion delivers a large part of the idea for $130, and the difference is iris and tonka depth rather than quality.

Gris Charnel vs Gris Charnel Extrait: which is better?

The extrait is not simply stronger. It adds cistus, vanilla, cedar and Indonesian patchouli, which makes it darker and more resinous, while the eau de parfum stays brighter and more tea-like. Buy the eau de parfum if you like the fig and tea opening; buy the extrait if you want the sandalwood drydown to dominate.

Does Gris Charnel last long?

It is a moderate performer rather than a monster. Expect roughly six to eight hours with close projection after the first hour — it behaves like a skin scent in the drydown. The extrait concentration lasts noticeably longer and sits heavier on the skin.

Is Gris Charnel unisex?

Yes. BDK Parfums lists it for both men and women and it sells across the board in our shop. The fig and iris read conventionally soft while the vetiver and sandalwood keep it from leaning feminine, which is a large part of why it became a signature bottle for so many people.

What is an extrait de parfum?

Extrait de parfum is the most concentrated standard form of a fragrance, carrying more perfume oil than an eau de parfum and typically wearing longer and closer to the skin. It is not automatically better — a higher concentration changes the balance of a composition, so an extrait often smells different, not just stronger.

Are there cheaper alternatives to Gris Charnel?

Within niche, yes: Essential Parfums Fig Infusion is $130 for 100 ml and shares the fig, fig leaf, black tea and sandalwood skeleton. There are also mass-market clones sold under other names. We do not stock them and would rather point you at a smaller house doing its own version than at a copy.

All six are in stock and ship from New Jersey with free standard shipping on US orders of $79 or more. Fig and sandalwood are hard to judge from a note list, so if you are near us they are all on the counter at our Somerville, New Jersey boutique. Questions: info@redolia.com.
