Description
What it smells like
Hellenist Éveil du Faune is an amber-woody eau de parfum built on the tension between something green and innocent and something frankly animal. The house calls it "a fragrance of metamorphosis, addictive and unsettling," and that is a fair description of how it behaves on skin: it begins bright and edible, and it ends up smelling like warm hide and smoke.
The opening is candied angelica — angelica root treated so that its herbal, slightly medicinal bite comes through sugared rather than bitter. Bergamot lifts it, and davana adds a jammy, faintly boozy fruitiness that keeps the sweetness from reading as simple. This first stretch is luminous and a little strange, green and glowing at once.
The heart is where the character turns. Leather arrives early and dominates, supple rather than tarry, and narcissus threads through it — a flower with a famously hay-like, almost animalic facet that bridges the green opening and the skin-warm base. Musk rounds the edges, keeping the leather close to the body instead of sharp.
The base is tobacco, oud and patchouli. The tobacco is dry and leafy, the oud smoky rather than barnyard-medicinal, and the patchouli earthy underneath both. Together they give the drydown its weight and its lingering, slightly smoky warmth. The dominant accords across the whole wear are leather, musk and oud, with animalic and powdery facets underneath.
Expect moderate-to-strong projection in the first hour and a long, skin-close life afterwards. This is a fragrance that rewards proximity — it reads as warm and worn-in rather than loud.
Who made it
Éveil du Faune was composed by Aliénor Massenet, VP Senior Perfumer at Symrise and a nose with more than thirty years of work behind her. She is most widely known for her long association with Memo Paris, where she composed the house's first fragrance, Lalibela, along with African Leather, Odéon and Marfa — a body of work that moves easily between dense animalic leathers and soft florals.
She describes this one in her own words: "I imagined Éveil du Faune as a tension between vegetal softness and animal sensuality. Angelica brings an almost innocent radiance; luminous and addictive, while leather and tobacco reveal something more instinctive, more carnal. I wanted to create a fragrance of transformation; that fleeting moment when the senses awaken and desire begins to stir both body and mind."
Hellenist describes her approach as "a form of contemporary alchemy," noting her taste for contrasts — light and shadow, softness and animality, innocence and sensuality. That is exactly the axis this fragrance is built on, and it is her first composition for the house.
Who it's for
This is a unisex fragrance, and genuinely so — the leather-and-tobacco structure has traditionally been coded masculine, while the candied, floral opening pulls the other way. It will suit anyone who likes a leather that is soft rather than aggressive, or who finds most ouds too medicinal and wants one that sits warm and smoky instead.
If you already wear and enjoy animalic leathers, narcissus-forward compositions, or dry tobacco scents, this will feel familiar in structure but unusual in its opening. If you are new to oud, this is a gentler entry point than most — the oud supports rather than leads.
It is not a quiet office scent, and it is not a fresh one. Anyone looking for something clean, citrusy or easy should look elsewhere in the Hellenist range.
When to wear it
Autumn and winter, overwhelmingly. The brand's own storyline places it in early autumn — "a carpet of damp leaves, while the first autumn sunlight filters gently through the trees" — and the fragrance follows that brief closely. Cool air suits the leather and tobacco; heat pushes the animalic facets forward in a way most people will find too much.
It leans evening rather than day. It is well suited to dinners, date nights, special occasions and any evening where you want something with presence but not volume. The long, skin-close drydown makes it a natural choice for close company.
About the house
Hellenist is a Parisian niche house founded in 2024 by Jean-David Jacoby, built entirely around Greek mythology. Each fragrance takes a myth as its starting point and works with a different perfumer rather than a single house nose — a roster that includes Maurice Roucel, Alexandra Carlin, Suzy Le Helley and Pierre-Constantin Guéros alongside Aliénor Massenet.
Éveil du Faune belongs to the house's Collection Mythologie and takes its subject from the forest of Foloi in the Peloponnese, in myth a haunt of fauns and satyrs. The faun — half man, half goat, drowsing in the leaves and waking to instinct — is the house's image for the moment innocence gives way to desire. The line drawing on the bottle and carton is that faun, reclining.
Released in 2026, it is the newest fragrance in the Hellenist range. Presented as a 100 ml eau de parfum in the house's clear rectangular flacon with a pale ash-wood cap.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
