Description
What it smells like
Sospiro Mezzo is a woody-aromatic eau de parfum that opens on lavender and citrus together — mandarin and bergamot lifting the lavender so it reads as fresh herb rather than soap — with juniper underneath adding a dry, piney, almost gin-like snap. That combination sets the register immediately: clean and composed, but not sweet and not sporty. The heart is where it becomes interesting. Crisp apple arrives alongside vetiver, which is an unusual pairing — the apple is tart and green rather than candied, and the vetiver's rooty bitterness stops it reading as a fruity fragrance at all. Ginger adds warmth and a little fizz, and magnolia smooths the edges with a creamy, lemony floral.
The base is moss, tonka, patchouli and musk: earthy and softly sweet, with the oakmoss giving a dry chypre-adjacent bitterness and the tonka rounding it into something comfortable. Expect seven to nine hours with moderate-to-strong projection for the first two, settling into a clean woody-musk skin scent. The house describes it as a feeling of suspended presence — fresh, composed, quietly magnetic — and the structure backs that up: it never raises its voice.
Who made it
Mezzo was composed by Salah Al Zarouni and Christian Provenzano, and released in 2025. Provenzano is the nose behind most of the Sospiro catalogue — including Basso, Tenore and Cadenza — so his hand is the continuity running through the house's Classica Collection.
A two-perfumer credit is unusual for Sospiro and shows in the result: the aromatic opening and the mossy, grounded base feel like two different instincts meeting in the middle, which is roughly what the name suggests.
Who it's for
This is for people who want a lavender fragrance that is not a fougère cliché. If you wear aromatic woods and find most of them either too barbershop or too generic-fresh, the apple-and-vetiver heart here is what makes Mezzo worth smelling — it is a genuinely odd idea executed cleanly.
Within Sospiro it sits beside Basso in weight and price, but where Basso is darker and more classical, Mezzo is brighter and greener. It is unisex and genuinely balanced. If you want sweetness, oud or anything loud, this is the wrong end of the catalogue — Afgano Puro is the one you want instead.
When to wear it
Mezzo is at its best in spring and autumn and crosses from day into evening without effort. The citrus-and-lavender opening suits mild weather, and the moss-and-patchouli base gives it enough body for a cool evening. It works for everyday wear, the office, daytime outings and evenings out — it is one of the more office-appropriate things Sospiro makes.
Two to three sprays. The projection is generous in the first hour and then settles close, so judge the dose on how it behaves at the half-hour mark rather than straight from the atomiser.
About the house
Sospiro Perfumes is the Italian niche house behind the velvet-flocked bottle with the gold crown cap and the oval medallion — one of the most recognisable flacons in niche perfumery. Its Classica Collection, which Mezzo joins, takes its names from musical terms and is built on rich, long-wearing compositions at full extrait-like concentration. Most of the line is composed by Christian Provenzano. Sospiro Mezzo Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 100 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
