Ramon Monegal Oud on Fire Extrait de Parfum
Description
What it smells like
Ramon Monegal Oud on Fire is an amber-woody extrait de parfum that takes agarwood and does to it what the name promises: sets it alight. It opens on cinnamon, black pepper and geranium. The cinnamon is the dry bark kind rather than the bakery kind, black pepper supplies a crackling sharpness, and geranium — rosy, green, slightly metallic — keeps the spices from turning into mulled wine. The first minutes genuinely read as heat.
The heart is built on oud steam and Oud Padong Laos, alongside patchouli. "Oud steam" is Monegal's own term for the smoky halo that rises when agarwood is burned rather than distilled, and that distinction is the whole idea of the fragrance: this is not the oil, it is the smoke. Padong Laos oud underneath is drier and sweeter, resinous rather than animalic, and patchouli adds a damp earthy weight that grounds the smoke so it does not simply float away.
The base is cedarwood, tonka and vanilla. Cedar extends the woody structure into something pencil-sharp and clean, tonka brings almond-hay sweetness, and vanilla rounds the finish. As an extrait it projects strongly for two to three hours and remains legible on skin well past the twelve-hour mark, with a smoky-sweet trail that clings to wool and leather.
Who made it
Oud on Fire was composed by Ramon Monegal and released in 2017 within My Ouds, his four-part study of agarwood. His own text for it describes oud wood that spreads a halo of aromatic smoke when burnt, sublimated with patchouli leaves and rose petals, seasoned with balsam fir, black pepper, cinnamon and cashmeran — fire as the thing that triggers the spell.
He characterises the finished perfume as provocative, powerful and bohemian.
Who it's for
This is for people who want smoke more than they want animalics. If incense, burning wood and dry spice are what you reach for, Oud on Fire is the more direct of the two Monegal ouds; if you want rose, chocolate and depth, its sibling Soul of Oud is the one. The house's own comparison is useful: the two start out similar, then Soul of Oud turns chocolatey and floral while Oud on Fire turns smokier and woodier.
It is unisex and leans masculine in wear, mostly because of the pepper-and-cedar spine. If you find oud fragrances medicinal, this is a gentler introduction than most — the smoke reads as a fireplace rather than a hospital. If you want anything fresh, transparent or office-appropriate, look elsewhere entirely.
When to wear it
Oud on Fire is a winter and late-autumn fragrance, and an evening one. Cold air is what it was built for: the spices stay crisp, the smoke carries, and the cedar-tonka base holds all night. It is right for dinners, evenings out, dates and occasions that call for presence.
In summer the cinnamon and pepper can turn abrasive in the first half hour, so if you wear it in heat, apply one spray and let it go straight to the drydown. As with any extrait, restraint is the correct technique — a single application to the chest will still be with you tomorrow morning.
About the house
Ramon Monegal is a Barcelona perfume house founded by the fourth generation of Spain's most important perfuming family. His great-grandfather's drugstore led to the founding of Myrurgia in 1916, and Ramon trained inside the family company from 1972 before studying with Artur Jordi Pey at Firmenich in Geneva, Marcel Carles in Grasse and Pierre Bourdon in Paris. He spent some thirty years as Myrurgia's in-house perfumer, and when the company was sold in 2000 he stepped away from corporate perfumery to work independently, launching his eponymous house later that decade. Literature is his stated inspiration after nature, which is why every fragrance is housed in the same faceted inkwell flacon with his monogram embossed on the flip-top cap: one vessel, many stories. Oud on Fire Extrait de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 50 ml bottle.
