Description
What It Smells Like
Parfums de Marly Althaïr is a Bourbon vanilla fragrance with cinnamon, praline and a bright touch of orange blossom. It is the sweetest of the house's big masculines, and the vanilla is the point of it: rich, slightly boozy and present from the first spray to the last hour.
The opening pairs cinnamon and cardamom with bergamot, while orange blossom adds a clean, honeyed floral note that keeps the spices lifted. Within a few minutes the heart arrives: Bourbon vanilla, the dark, creamy type grown in Madagascar and the nearby islands, sharpened by elemi, a resin with a lemony, peppery edge.
The base is unapologetically gourmand. Praline and candied almond give a nutty, caramelised sweetness, tonka bean adds its almond-and-hay warmth, and guaiac wood brings a faint smokiness. Musk and ambroxan, a mineral amber material, give it the diffusion the house is known for.
On Fragrantica the accords read sweet, vanilla and warm spicy, in that order. The community rates it 4.39 out of 5 from more than 12,000 votes, a remarkable score for a 2023 release.
Who Made It
Hamid Merati-Kashani is a perfumer at dsm-firmenich and the name behind much of the modern Parfums de Marly range. Layton, Althaïr, Althaïr Exclusif and Valero are all credited to him. His signature is a warm, polished base of vanilla, woods and spice that stays smooth however much volume he gives it. Ilias Ermenidis is a long-serving perfumer at the same fragrance house, with decades of work across fine fragrance.
Who It's For
Althaïr is for people who love vanilla and want the fullest version of it. Fragrantica lists it as a masculine, but nothing in the composition is gendered, and it is widely worn by women.
If you find Layton a little too fresh at the top, or Herod too smoky, this sits between them and goes sweeter than both. If sugary notes tire you, it will be too much. Althaïr Exclusif takes the same idea further with amaretto and saffron.
When to Wear It
Fragrantica voters place it in winter first and fall second, with warm months far behind. Vanilla and praline bloom in cold air and can turn cloying in heat.
It leans to the evening: dinners, dates, winter parties. Parfumo's community rates both projection and longevity as above average, so two sprays are usually enough, and it will still be on your sweater the next morning.
About the House
Parfums de Marly was founded in Paris in 2009 by Julien Sprecher. The house takes its name and its imagery from the royal château of Marly and from the perfumed court of Louis XV, an era when fragrance was worn lavishly and horse racing was a royal passion. That is why every bottle carries a crest of two rearing horses, and why several of the fragrances, Herod, Godolphin and Darley among them, are named after celebrated horses.
The style is generous and easy to like: rich, long-wearing compositions, each built around one clear idea and usually signed by a well-known perfumer. Parfums de Marly is a boutique-only house at Redolia. It is sold at our perfumery at 92 West Main Street in Somerville, New Jersey, and not through the website. Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
