What It Smells Like

Initio Atomic Rose is a rich rose fragrance with vanilla and amber. It is part of The Carnal Blends, and it is one of the most admired modern rose perfumes: full and velvety, but bright enough to wear easily.

The opening is pink pepper and bergamot. Pink pepper is rosy and gently spicy rather than hot, so it lifts the rose instead of covering it, and the bergamot adds a brief citrus sparkle.

The heart is the whole point. Two roses are used together: Bulgarian rose, which is deep, honeyed and jam-like, and Turkish rose, which is fresher and slightly peppery. Egyptian jasmine gives the bouquet a creamy fullness, so the rose smells like a living flower with weight and warmth, not a thin rosewater.

The base is Madagascar vanilla and amber, soft and sweet, which makes the drydown smooth and a little powdery. Fragrantica's community ranks rose far ahead as the leading accord, followed by vanilla, soft spicy and citrus, and rates it 4.27 out of 5 from about 4,500 votes.

Who Made It

Initio does not name the perfumers behind most of its fragrances, and neither Fragrantica nor Parfumo lists one for Atomic Rose. We would rather leave the credit open than guess. The house presents its fragrances as the work of a collective, with the materials and their effect on mood placed ahead of any individual signature.

Who It's For

Atomic Rose is for anyone who wants a serious rose perfume. Fragrantica lists it for women and men, and many men wear it, because the pepper and amber keep it from reading as conventionally pretty.

Initio Parfums Privés launched in Paris in 2015 with an unusual premise: that scent acts on mood and attraction before we consciously register it.
