Description
What it smells like
D'ORSAY Tilleul d'Ailleurs. C.G. is a floral-green Eau de Toilette built around linden blossom, the honeyed flower of the lime tree that perfumes French streets in early summer. It opens with petitgrain and lemon: petitgrain, distilled from bitter orange leaves and twigs, is green and slightly bitter, and the lemon adds a clean, zesty sparkle. The start is crisp and unmistakably natural.
The heart is the linden blossom itself, rendered as a soft, nectar-like floral with a tea-like transparency. It is neither heady nor sugary; the effect is closer to standing under a linden tree in June than to a bouquet in a room. This is the note the whole fragrance exists to show.
The base is gentle and warm. Acacia wood gives a pale, dry woodiness, and beeswax adds a honeyed, slightly waxy softness that echoes the nectar in the flower. As an Eau de Toilette it wears lightly and close to the skin, which suits its transparent character; expect a few hours of quiet presence rather than a heavy trail.
Who made it
This is the house's historic perfume. D'ORSAY first published it in 1915 under the name Tilleul, and it was reworked in 1995 by Olivia Giacobetti, one of the most influential French perfumers of her generation. Giacobetti founded her own studio, Iunx, and is known for transparent, airy compositions including Diptyque Philosykos, L'Artisan Parfumeur Premier Figuier, Hermès Hiris and En Passant for Frédéric Malle.
Her signature restraint is obvious here: the formula leaves space around the linden so the flower stays legible from first spray to drydown. The scent has also been sold under the name Vouloir être ailleurs. C.G., and some official bottles still carry that label; the composition is the same.
Who it’s for
This is for people who love green florals, tea notes and the smell of real flowers rather than perfumery abstractions. If you admire Giacobetti's transparent style, or you want a fragrance that feels calm and unforced, it is a natural choice.
It is unisex and particularly good for anyone who finds most perfumes too loud. Those who want projection and longevity above all should look to the house's Extraits instead.
When to wear it
Tilleul d'Ailleurs is made for spring and summer and for daytime. It is excellent in warm weather, in the office, for gardens and walks, and for anyone who wants to smell fresh without smelling of soap or citrus cologne.
Reapplication is part of the pleasure with an Eau de Toilette this transparent. In cold months it can feel slight, but on a mild day it remains one of the most graceful linden fragrances available.
About the house
D'ORSAY is a Parisian perfume house whose story begins in 1830 with Count Alfred d'Orsay, a dandy and artist who, as the house tells it, composed a fragrance in tribute to his love for Marguerite, Countess of Blessington. It is remembered as one of the first perfumes worn by women and men alike, and the modern house has made that its founding principle: every D'ORSAY scent is unisex. The current collection names each Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette after a person, adding their initials, so the range reads as a set of portraits rather than products. Fragrances are made in France and sold in 50 ml and 90 ml bottles, and the house's Paris boutique is at 44 rue du Bac. Tilleul d'Ailleurs. C.G. Eau de Toilette is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 90 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
