Room 1015 Cherry Punk Extrait de Parfum: What It Smells Like

Cherry Punk Extrait de Parfum is Room 1015's leather-and-cherry extrait, composed by Robertet perfumer Jérôme Epinette, and the single most important thing to know about it is that it is not a stronger version of the eau de parfum.

What it smells like

Cherry, saffron and Sichuan pepper open together, and the effect is immediately dry and faintly metallic rather than sweet. Saffron is the key: it lends the top a leathery, almost medicinal edge that cuts straight through the fruit.

The heart is violet, jasmine and mimosa — powdery florals sitting beneath the cherry, giving it an old-fashioned, cosmetic texture that is genuinely unusual in a modern fruit scent. The base is black leather, tonka bean and patchouli, and the leather here is supple and dark rather than tarry or smoky.

Here is where the two Cherry Punks separate. The community ranks this one cherry-first at full weight, then sweet, warm spicy, vanilla and fresh spicy, with distinct nutty and metallic facets. The eau de parfum is ranked leather-first, with animalic and smoky qualities this extrait does not have at all. Fragrantica even files them under different families — this one as a leather fragrance, the EDP as amber spicy. Knowing one genuinely does not tell you about the other.

Who it's for

For anyone who likes the cherry trend but wants the fruit handled with restraint. This is the version where cherry is treated as a material rather than a flavour.

It suits people who already wear saffron, leather or powdery florals. If you have tried the eau de parfum and found it too animalic, this is the cleaner and more cherry-forward of the pair — and if you found the extrait too polite, the EDP is waiting.

Performance: the extrait concentration makes this the longer-lasting of the two, with moderate-to-strong projection for the first few hours and a long close drydown.

Cold weather and evenings. This is a dressed-up fragrance — special occasions, dinners, romantic evenings — and not an office choice.

How it sits in the line

Room 1015 was founded in Paris in 2015 by Michael Partouche, and takes its name from the Sunset Strip hotel room that hosted some of rock's more notorious nights. Cherry Punk is its best-known fragrance, and its brief is specific: 430 King's Road, Vivienne Westwood's SEX shop, and the London punk scene that grew around it.

The extrait arrived in 2023, three years after the eau de parfum, and the house treated it as a new composition rather than a reformulation. That decision is unusual and worth respecting when you shop: most brands release an extrait as the same formula at higher concentration, so buyers reasonably assume they know what they are getting. Here they would be wrong.

The quickest way to tell the two apart in the hand is the cap: silver for the extraits, black for the eaux de parfum. Electric Wood Extrait is the only other extrait in the current line.

The full note breakdown is on the Room 1015 Cherry Punk Extrait de Parfum product page, the rest of the house is in the Room 1015 collection, and you can find comparable scents under Leathery. It is also on the scent bar at our Somerville boutique — worth trying on skin before you commit, because this is a house whose fragrances change a good deal between the first spray and the drydown.
