Description
What it smells like
Ramon Monegal Dopamine is a floral-fruity eau de parfum built to behave like the chemical it is named after: a fast, bright hit up front that settles into something warm and steady. It opens on mango, raspberry and pineapple — a tropical trio that could easily turn into candy, but Monegal keeps the fruit juicy rather than jammy. The pineapple supplies the fizz, the mango the pulpy body, and the raspberry a tart red edge that stops the opening from going syrupy.
The heart is where it earns its place. Ylang-ylang brings a creamy banana-and-jasmine richness, cyclamen adds a cool watery green floral, and helional — an aroma material that smells of cut grass and sea air — throws the whole heart open. The effect is a fruit basket left outdoors: still sweet, but aired out.
The base is vanilla musk, oakmoss and ambroxan. Oakmoss is the surprise, and it is what gives Dopamine a chypre-ish spine under all that fruit: dry, inky, slightly bitter. Ambroxan supplies the modern mineral-amber lift that makes the drydown radiate, and the vanilla musk softens the landing. Expect five to seven hours on skin, with the strongest projection in the first ninety minutes.
Who made it
Dopamine was composed by Ramon Monegal, the fourth-generation Barcelona perfumer behind the house. It is part of Katharsis, the 2026 collection he created with the artist Miguel Caravaca, in which each of the six fragrances is tied to a single state of mind. Dopamine's is euphoria: the brand describes it as an emotional activator rather than a rational one, a chemical discharge turned into perfume.
The house line for it is simply "Don't think: act", and the composition follows that brief literally — the fruit hits before you have decided what you think of it.
Who it's for
This is for people who want a fruity fragrance with some structure underneath. If you like tropical openings but find most of them collapse into sugar within the hour, the oakmoss-and-ambroxan base here is the reason to try Dopamine. It also suits anyone who wears ylang-heavy florals and wants a brighter, less powdery version.
It is unisex, though the fruit and ylang give it a slightly feminine lean in practice. If you prefer woods, smoke or leather, this will read as too cheerful. If you want a mood-lifter that still smells like perfume rather than shower gel, it works.
When to wear it
Dopamine is a spring and summer fragrance, and a daytime one. Warm weather pushes the fruit forward and the airy helional heart keeps it from becoming cloying in heat, which is exactly where many tropical scents fail. It is well suited to everyday wear, daytime outings and warm evenings out.
In cold weather the top notes shorten and the drydown arrives faster, which is not a disaster — the oakmoss base is pleasant on its own — but you lose the best part. Three or four sprays are reasonable; this is an eau de parfum that rewards a generous hand more than most.
About the house
Ramon Monegal is a Barcelona perfume house founded by the fourth generation of Spain's most important perfuming family. His great-grandfather's drugstore led to the founding of Myrurgia in 1916, and Ramon trained inside the family company from 1972 before studying with Artur Jordi Pey at Firmenich in Geneva, Marcel Carles in Grasse and Pierre Bourdon in Paris. He spent some thirty years as Myrurgia's in-house perfumer, and when the company was sold in 2000 he stepped away from corporate perfumery to work independently, launching his eponymous house later that decade. Literature is his stated inspiration after nature, which is why every fragrance is housed in the same faceted inkwell flacon with his monogram embossed on the flip-top cap: one vessel, many stories. Dopamine Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 75 ml bottle.
