Description
What it smells like
Memo Paris Odéon is an amber-floral eau de parfum built around rose treated as a dessert rather than a bouquet. It opens on rose absolute alongside a candied rose accord — the absolute dark, winey and almost savoury, the candied accord sugared and jammy — and the two together read like rose loukoum rather than rose petals. The heart brings sandalwood, cashmeran and patchouli, which is where the composition stops being sweet: cashmeran is a musky, woody, faintly ambery material that behaves like a warm blanket thrown over the rose, and the patchouli adds damp earth underneath. The base is tonka bean, dry amber and musks, soft and powdery, closer to skin than to perfume by the third hour. Expect seven to nine hours with strong early projection, settling into something quiet and close.
It is named for the Paris theatre district, and the gold label shows the city's rooftops; the fragrance has the same after-dark quality — warm, upholstered, a little old-fashioned in the best sense.
Who made it
Odéon was composed by Aliénor Massenet and released in 2020 in Memo's Fleurs Bohèmes line. Massenet wrote Memo's first fragrance, Lalibela, and has worked with the house across some fifty releases since — she is effectively its house perfumer.
Odéon shows the opposite side of her range from African Leather: where that one is spiced and animalic, this is plush and sugared, and the only thing the two share is a base built to last for hours rather than minutes.
Who it's for
This is for people who want a rose that does not apologise for being sweet. If you wear gourmand ambers or jammy rose compositions and find most of them either too thin or too sharp, Odéon is the upholstered version — the cashmeran and sandalwood give it body that a sugar-and-rose accord alone never has.
Within Memo it is the natural counterpart to Marfa: both are florals, but Marfa is a white-floral built on tuberose and daylight while Odéon is a red-floral built for evening. It is unisex, though the sweetness gives it a feminine lean in practice. If you dislike sweet fragrances or find patchouli muddy, this is not the bottle.
When to wear it
Odéon is an autumn and winter fragrance and an evening one. The sweetness behaves in cold air and becomes heavy in heat, so treat summer as a one-spray proposition. It suits dinners, nights out, dates and anything where you want to be noticed at close range rather than across a room.
Two sprays to the chest is right for most wearers. It softens considerably after the first hour, so if you want it to register later in the evening, apply to clothing as well as skin — it holds on wool for days.
About the house
Memo Paris was founded in Paris in 2007 by Clara Molloy and her husband John, and conceives every fragrance as a travel note — a place with a particular pull, built from intense raw materials. Each release joins the house's Carte de Tendre, an emotional map of the world, and carries artwork by a named visual artist on its gold label. Fleurs Bohèmes, the line Odéon belongs to, holds Memo's florals. Odéon Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 75 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
