What It Smells Like

Initio Oud for Greatness Neo is a fresh, aromatic oud fragrance. It is a new edition of the house signature, first introduced in 2024, and it keeps the polished oud of the original while making the whole composition greener and brighter.

Fragrantica and Parfumo list five notes without a top, heart and base structure: oud, fir, lavender, saffron and bergamot. The freshness comes first. Bergamot and lavender give a clean, aromatic opening, and fir adds the cool, resinous smell of a pine forest.

The oud and saffron arrive quickly behind them. They are the same pairing that defines Oud for Greatness, dry, woody and slightly leathery, but with the nutmeg and patchouli of the original no longer listed, and fir and bergamot in their place, the effect is lighter and more open. The house says the composition uses what it calls neuroscents, materials chosen for their effect on mood; whatever you make of that, the result smells like a brisker, more modern version of the original.

Who Made It

Initio does not name the perfumers behind most of its fragrances, and neither Fragrantica nor Parfumo lists one for Oud for Greatness Neo. We would rather leave the credit open than guess. The house presents its fragrances as the work of a collective, with the materials and their effect on mood placed ahead of any individual signature.

Oud for Greatness Neo is for people who like the idea of the original but want it fresher, and for anyone who wants an oud they can wear in the daytime. Fragrantica lists it for women and men.

If you find Oud for Greatness too dense, try this. If you already own the original, the two are close enough in character that you may not need both, but different enough to be worth comparing on skin. If you want sweetness with your oud, Oud for Grace is the one.

When to Wear It

Fragrantica voters place it in winter and fall, with spring a strong third, and night ahead of day by a smaller margin than the original. The fir and lavender widen its range.

It can be worn to the office as well as in the evening, which is unusual for an oud. Parfumo's community rates its longevity as above average.

About the House

Initio Parfums Privés launched in Paris in 2015 with an unusual premise: that scent acts on mood and attraction before we consciously register it. The fragrances are built around materials chosen for that effect, such as musks, woods, resins and the jasmine-like molecule hedione, and they are grouped into collections with a stated purpose: The Absolutes, The Carnal Blends, The Black Gold Project, the Hedonist collection and Supercharged.
