Ramon Monegal
Ramon Monegal (born Barcelona, 1951) is a fourth-generation Spanish master perfumer and the author of every fragrance in the house that carries his name. He entered the family firm Myrurgia in 1972 and completed his training with Artur Jordi Pey at Firmenich in Geneva, Marcel Carles in Grasse and Pierre Bourdon in Paris — a lineage that connects him directly to the classical French school while keeping him rooted in Spanish materials and Spanish imagery.
He served roughly three decades as Myrurgia's in-house perfumer, composing Alada in 1979 and later working for Adolfo Domínguez, Antonio Miró and Massimo Dutti. After the company changed hands in 2000 he left industrial perfumery and began composing independently under his own name, and he continues to formulate and oversee production himself in Barcelona.
His signature is a willingness to build a composition around one difficult material and then make it comfortable: the cumin at the centre of Matador, the twin Assam and Padong Laos ouds in Soul of Oud, the burnt sugar under the vanilla in Yummy Jam. He cites literature as his primary inspiration after nature, designed the house's inkwell flacon himself while writing a novel, and published a book of his own, La Perfumista, in 2012.
