Description
What it smells like
Memo Paris Palais Bourbon is an amber-spicy eau de parfum and the densest thing the house makes. It opens on five materials at once — black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon bark, incense and geranium — which is unusual and immediately tells you the register: dry, resinous, church-adjacent, with the pepper crackling over the top and the geranium keeping the spices from turning edible. The heart is where the weight arrives: Peru balsam, benzoin, cistus, tonka bean and vanilla, a stack of resins and absolutes that together smell like warm wood smoke, candied amber and old paper. The base closes on sandalwood, patchouli, guaiacwood and vetiver, so the long drydown is woody and slightly smoky rather than sweet. Expect ten hours or more; the balsam-and-benzoin heart is still legible well into the next morning.
Named for the Paris palace, it has the same quality as a grand interior in winter — gilded, heavy, slightly airless by design.
Who made it
Palais Bourbon was composed by Gaël Montero and released in 2024 as part of Memo's Graines Vagabondes line. Memo's own text describes him as tempering and guiding the composition from the podium, which is an accurate description of what the fragrance needed: a great many loud materials held in balance rather than left to compete.
It is his signature piece for the house, and the one to smell if you want to understand what Memo means by Graines Vagabondes — restless, spice-and-resin compositions rather than the florals or leathers.
Who it's for
This is for people who like incense and resin and want them at full strength. If you wear amber-spicy compositions, church-incense fragrances or heavy balsamic ambers, Palais Bourbon belongs on your shortlist. It is also the right pick for anyone who finds most ambers too sweet — the vetiver and guaiacwood in the base keep a dry line running through the whole thing.
Within Memo it is the heavyweight. African Leather is denser in the base but brighter on top; Palais Bourbon is uniformly weighty from the first spray. It is unisex and wears somewhat masculine because of the pepper-and-vetiver spine. If you want anything light, fresh or office-safe, this is emphatically the wrong bottle.
When to wear it
Palais Bourbon is a winter and late-autumn fragrance, and an evening one. Cold air is what resins were made for — the incense carries, the balsams stay warm rather than syrupy, and the drydown holds all night. It suits dinners, evenings out, dates and formal occasions.
One spray is a decision; two is the maximum for most people. In heat or in small rooms the resins build quickly, so if you wear it in summer, apply low on the body and let it warm up slowly rather than spraying to the throat.
About the house
Memo Paris was founded in Paris in 2007 by Clara Molloy and her husband John, and builds every fragrance as a travel note — a destination with a particular pull, rendered in intense raw materials. The house credits both a perfumer and a visual artist on each release, produces in France, and keeps its flagship at 24 rue Cambon. Graines Vagabondes, this fragrance's line, is where Memo puts its spice-and-resin work. Palais Bourbon Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 75 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
