Description
What it smells like
Memo Paris African Leather is a warm-spicy leather eau de parfum and the fragrance most people mean when they say they like Memo. It opens on cardamom, geranium and pink pepper — the cardamom cool and resinous, the geranium rosy and faintly metallic, the pink pepper crackling over both — so the first minutes are bright and dry rather than heavy. The heart turns: rose, patchouli and cinnamon arrive together, and the rose is jammy enough to read as sweet while the patchouli pulls it back into the earth. Then the base, which is the reason to own it — a leather accord with oud and amber underneath, supple and slightly animalic, closer to the smell of a saddle and warm skin than to tanned hide. Expect eight hours or more, with strong projection for the first two and a dense skin scent long after.
The trick of the composition is that nothing in it is fresh, yet it never feels airless. The cardamom keeps cutting back through the leather for the first hour, and that tension is what stops it becoming a flat oud-and-amber wall.
Who made it
African Leather was composed by Aliénor Massenet and released in 2015 as part of Memo's Cuirs Nomades line. Massenet wrote Lalibela, the first fragrance Memo ever released, and has worked with the house ever since across some fifty compositions — she is as close to a house perfumer as Memo has.
Her method shows here: a bold, legible top accord followed by a long structural base that carries the idea for hours rather than minutes. The gold label is by the artist Alain Bouldouyre, in keeping with Memo's habit of crediting a visual artist alongside the nose.
Who it's for
This is for people who already like leather fragrances and want one with spice rather than smoke. If you wear oud-and-rose compositions, or dry animalic leathers, African Leather sits comfortably alongside them while being warmer and more wearable than most. It is also the right first Memo for someone curious about the house, because it shows the Cuirs Nomades idea at full strength.
Compared with the other Memo leather, Irish Leather, this is the heavier and more opulent of the two — Irish Leather is green, aromatic and daylight-friendly where African Leather is spiced and nocturnal. It is unisex and wears slightly masculine simply because of the patchouli-and-oud weight. If you want anything transparent or fresh, look elsewhere entirely.
When to wear it
African Leather belongs to autumn and winter and to the evening. Cold air suits it: the spices stay sharp, the leather carries, and the amber base does not become cloying the way it can in heat. It is right for dinners, evenings out, dates and occasions with some formality — a restaurant in November rather than a terrace in July.
Two sprays is plenty. This projects genuinely well for its first couple of hours, and the most common complaint about fragrances at this density is self-inflicted by over-application. On wool and leather it will still be there the next day.
About the house
Memo Paris was founded in Paris in 2007 by Clara Molloy and her husband John, and builds every fragrance as a travel note — a destination with a particular pull, rendered in intense raw materials rather than postcard imagery. The house keeps its flagship at 24 rue Cambon, produces in France, and credits both a perfumer and a visual artist on each release. Cuirs Nomades, the nomadic-leather line this belongs to, is its signature. African Leather Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 75 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
