Description
What it smells like
Jovoy Paris Psychédélique is an amber-woody eau de parfum built on patchouli, and it is the house's answer to the question of what a patchouli fragrance should smell like when it is neither a head-shop cliché nor a chypre. It opens on citrus fruits — a brief, bright flash that lasts perhaps five minutes and exists mainly to stop the patchouli arriving cold.
Then the heart, which is most of the fragrance. Patchouli leads, dark and earthy, but it is immediately padded by cistus (labdanum), which brings sweet resin and a leathery warmth, and by amber. Geranium and rose sit across the top of that — geranium rosy and slightly metallic, rose jammy — and they are what make Psychédélique feel like a perfume rather than a raw material. The floral heart against the earth is the tension the whole thing runs on.
The base is simply vanilla and musk, and after all that weight it lands remarkably softly: a sweet, faintly powdery skin scent that is much more approachable than the opening suggests. Expect eight hours or more with strong projection for two or three; this is one of the longest-lasting eaux de parfum in the Jovoy line and it stains clothing pleasantly for days.
Who made it
Psychédélique was composed by Jacques Flori and released in 2011, alongside Private Label in the early wave of the revived house. Hénin's own note on it praises Flori's complete mastery of the material, which in a patchouli fragrance is the relevant compliment — patchouli is easy to use and very hard to use well.
The name points at the 1960s association, but the fragrance is not a period piece; it is closer to an amber than to anything countercultural.
Who it's for
This is for people who love patchouli and want it presented properly. If you own dry patchouli scents and want a warmer, rosier, more resinous treatment, Psychédélique is the one. It also works for anyone who likes big ambers and wants one with real earth underneath instead of just vanilla and labdanum.
It is unisex and genuinely balanced — the rose and geranium pull one way, the patchouli and cistus the other. If patchouli reads as musty or dated to you, this will not convert you. If you want a cold-weather fragrance with weight and a soft landing, it is hard to beat at the price.
When to wear it
Psychédélique belongs to autumn and winter and to the evening. Cold air is what patchouli and labdanum were made for; the projection carries, and the vanilla-musk drydown is at its most comfortable when it is genuinely cold out. It suits dinners, nights out, dates and occasions with some formality.
Summer wear is possible but not recommended at more than one spray — in heat the resins build fast. As with most fragrances of this density, restraint reads as confidence and over-application reads as the opposite.
About the house
Jovoy Paris has two beginnings. The first was in 1923, when Blanche Arvoy founded Jovoy as a Parisian perfume and cosmetics maison; the name then went quiet for more than eighty years. The second came when François Hénin — who spent years chasing raw materials in the forests of Vietnam before a spell in Grasse — revived it, a relaunch the house dates to 2010. Jovoy operates as a publisher rather than a laboratory, commissioning independent noses such as Cécile Zarokian, Jacques Flori, Véronique Nyberg and Vanina Muracciole, and it also runs Jovoy Parfums Rares at 4 rue de Castiglione, a step from the Place Vendôme, which calls itself the embassy of rare perfumes. Psychédélique Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 75 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
