THE PERFUMER

Jacques Flori

Jacques Flori joined Robertet in Grasse in 1973 as a perfumer’s assistant and rose through the company to Senior Perfumer, trained under Robertet’s Jean Mober. His career has taken him to projects in Indonesia and the United States, and he has said that his inspiration comes from natural raw materials rather than from briefs or trends — which shows in the work.

He is best known for dense, resinous compositions: incense, patchouli, labdanum, the materials that reward a perfumer who is willing to let them dominate. For Jovoy Paris he wrote Psychédélique (2011), a patchouli built out with cistus, rose and geranium and landing on vanilla and musk, and also La Liturgie des Heures. Elsewhere his name sits behind Etro Messe de Minuit, Amouage’s Library Collection Opus IV, Xerjoff Richwood, Casamorati Mefisto and Pierre Balmain Ivoire.

François Hénin’s note on Psychédélique praises Flori’s complete mastery of the material, which in a patchouli fragrance is the compliment that counts: patchouli is an easy note to use and a very hard one to use well.
