Description
What It Smells Like
BDK Parfums Stellar Silk is a vanilla that refuses to be a dessert. It is the best-rated of the three Collection Studio releases, and it gets there by treating vanilla as a powdery, spiced material rather than a sweet one.
It opens on cinnamon and ginger — Laotian cinnamon, warm and dry rather than sugary, with ginger adding a bright heat. There is no fruit and no caramel; the spice is the entire introduction.
The heart is the fragrance's substance: Bourbon vanilla alongside orris butter, tonka bean and Siam benzoin. Orris is the decisive ingredient — cool, powdery and faintly rooty, it pulls the vanilla away from the bakery entirely and gives the composition a cosmetic, almost make-up-like texture. Butter adds a lactonic richness underneath without tipping into gourmand.
The base is Australian white sandalwood, used generously. It is creamy and dry at the same time, and it is what makes the drydown feel like fabric rather than food — which is presumably the point, given the name.
Community accords rank vanilla first at full weight, then powdery, woody, warm spicy and amber, with iris clearly present further down. It is rated 4.20 out of 5 from 389 votes, the most-voted of the three.
Who Made It
All three Collection Studio fragrances were composed by Jordi Fernández, a senior perfumer at Givaudan and one of the most prolific noses working today, with several hundred fragrances to his name. He is self-taught — unusually at this level, he did not attend ISIPCA — and began at Eurofragrance in Barcelona before Givaudan.
The collection was developed with Givaudan through what BDK describes as a continuous dialogue with the house's own direction, rather than being briefed out and handed back. His work also appears at D'ORSAY, Essential Parfums, BORNTOSTANDOUT and Mind Games, and elsewhere in the BDK range. Stellar Silk is the silk corner of the collection, built around sandalwood.
Who It's For
For people who want to wear vanilla without smelling edible. If the big sweet vanillas have always been too much, the orris and sandalwood here solve exactly that problem.
It also suits anyone who likes iris fragrances and finds them too austere — the vanilla and tonka give this one warmth that a pure orris composition never has. Of the three Collection Studio scents it is the softest and the easiest to wear, and it is the obvious starting point for the line.
Unisex, and the powdery-woody structure genuinely reads either way.
When to Wear It
Cooler weather suits it best — the sandalwood and benzoin have more presence in cold air — but the orris keeps it from ever becoming heavy, so it is wearable well into spring.
It works day or evening. The projection is moderate and it settles close to the skin after the first hour, which makes it comfortable in company and a reasonable office choice applied lightly. Expect long wear from the absolu concentration.
About the House
BDK Parfums is a Parisian house founded by David Benoît Kian, whose family has been in perfumery for three generations. The main line — Gris Charnel, Rouge Smoking, Pas Ce Soir, Oud Abramad — built its reputation on compositions that are rich but legible, and it has become one of the more widely collected French niche houses of the last decade.
Collection Studio is the house's couture tier, positioned above the main range and presented in a heavier flacon with a metallic base. The three fragrances are each built around a material — silk for Stellar Silk, sequins for Silver Ceremony, leather and oud for Oud Paradisio. Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
