Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel

Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel is the perfumer behind some of the most characterful releases from the niche house Fugazzi. Her work favours clear, confident structures, often a sharp citrus-and-pepper opening that gives way to a deeper, darker heart, and it rewards anyone who likes fragrances with a strong backbone.

For Fugazzi she composed Angel Dust Eau de Parfum, which opens with an electric burst of Calabrian bergamot and black pepper that stays structural rather than decorative, and its richer counterpart, Angel Dust Extrait de Parfum. Choosing between the two is mostly a question of intensity: the Extrait sits closer to the skin and lasts longer, while the Eau de Parfum projects its bright opening more readily.

She also created the smoky-rose BORNTOSTANDOUT by FUGAZZI (Born to Stand Out) Extrait de Parfum, the Fugazzi half of the 2024 Fugazzi × BORNTOSTANDOUT collaboration. Bergamot and geranium open onto a substantial rose sharpened by pepper and deepened by akigalawood, a patchouli-derived material with a dry, peppery woodiness.
