THE NOTE

Truffle

Truffle is among the strangest notes a perfumer can use, and one of the most effective in small doses. The real fungus smells earthy, musty and faintly savoury, with a damp forest-floor quality and a musky undertone that is genuinely animalic rather than merely earthy.

That musky character is the reason it works in fragrance at all. Truffle shares facets with materials perfumery already values — oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, certain musks — so it can be folded into a woody or chypre structure and read as depth rather than as food. Used heavily it smells like a kitchen; used lightly it smells expensive.

In practice the note is almost always reconstructed rather than extracted, since real truffle is prohibitively costly and its aroma does not survive extraction well. Perfumers build it from earthy and sulphurous molecules balanced against something warm, and it typically sits in the heart of a composition, bridging bright top notes and a mossy or resinous base.

Truffle suits people who like their woods damp and mineral rather than dry and clean. If you enjoy oakmoss, wet earth and a slightly savoury edge, this is a note to follow. Browse the Redolia fragrances built with truffle below.
