Pierre Montale
Pierre Montale is the French perfumer who did more than any other single figure to bring oud into Western perfumery. He spent years in Saudi Arabia, working with agarwood and composing for the Gulf market, and returned to France with a way of building fragrances that was denser and more material-forward than European taste was used to at the time.
He founded Montale in the early 2000s, putting oud compositions into tall aluminium flacons at a time when almost no Western house was using agarwood seriously. The approach proved influential: much of the oud-centred niche perfumery that followed traces back to those releases. In 2008 the related house Mancera followed, trading the aluminium bottle for heavy glass and widening the range into gourmands, ambers and marine compositions.
His signature is consistency rather than surprise. A Pierre Montale composition is usually built on a small number of strong materials — oud, rose, saffron, vanilla, amberwood — given high concentration and allowed to project. The compositions tend to be legible from the first spray, with less of the slow unfolding that other perfumers prize, and they are known for lasting.
Redolia carries his work under the Mancera name. Browse the fragrances below.
