Jérôme di Marino
Jérôme di Marino is a French perfumer at Mane, and the nose behind most of the current Room 1015 line — Wasabi Klub, Poppy Riot, Love-O-Matic, Jasmine Freak, Wavechild and the Electric Wood Extrait.
He grew up in Nice, close enough to Grasse for perfumery to be visible as an industry rather than a mystery, and originally studied sciences intending to work on synthesising raw materials for flavour and fragrance. Discovering that composing was a job in itself redirected him. He completed a two-year trainee-perfumer internship at Givaudan, spent a year as an evaluator in the olfactive development team at Givenchy Parfums, and then entered the trainee-perfumer programme at Takasago, where he was mentored by Francis Kurkdjian.
His commercial work is wide and often very visible: Kenzo World Power, Elie Saab Le Parfum in White, Burberry Her Elixir de Parfum and Mr. Burberry Element, which he has named as a personal favourite. He has also composed for Paco Rabanne, Acqua di Parma, Bottega Veneta and BORNTOSTANDOUT, with well over a hundred fragrances to his name.
What he brings to Room 1015 is a willingness to put an awkward material at the centre of a composition and make it wearable — the wasabi and Sichuan pepper of Wasabi Klub, the bubble gum in Love-O-Matic — without the result turning into a novelty.
