No single scent is proven to be the most attractive to men. What research does show is that a pleasant smell makes a woman's face look more attractive, a bad smell hurts more than a good one helps, and a perfume she chooses herself tends to suit her skin best.
Quick answer: Science does not name one "man magnet" note. Studies find that pleasant odors raise attractiveness ratings of women's faces, and that vanilla-type smells are among the most widely liked odors across cultures. The most attractive perfume is usually a warm, pleasant scent you actually love, worn lightly on clean skin.
Do men actually care how a woman smells?
They do, though smell shares the stage with other senses. In a 1997 questionnaire study of 332 adults by Rachel Herz and Elizabeth Cahill, published in Human Nature, men rated sight and smell as roughly equally important when choosing a lover. Women, by contrast, put smell first.
That is self-reported opinion rather than a lab test. Still, it tells you something useful: for most men, scent is part of the first impression, alongside how you look and carry yourself.
Does perfume make a woman more attractive? What studies found
Several lab studies suggest it can. In a 2014 study from the Monell Chemical Senses Center, published in PLOS ONE, 18 young adults rated photos of women's faces while smelling one of five odors, ranging from fish oil to rose oil. The more pleasant the smell, the more attractive the faces were rated.
A 2024 University of Liverpool study in Behavioural Brain Research pointed the same way. When 22 women smelled a pleasant, commercially available body wash fragrance, they rated women's faces, and their own, as more attractive, confident and feminine than with clean air. The study was funded by Unilever, which made the product, so it is worth reading with that in mind.
There is an important catch. A 2021 review by Oxford psychologist Charles Spence found that unpleasant odors generally lower attractiveness ratings more than pleasant fragrances raise them. He also noted that not every study finds an effect, and that lab setups with photos are quite different from meeting someone in person.
Is there one scent men find most attractive?
Not one, but there are a few clues worth knowing. The most quoted is a small study by neurologist Alan Hirsch and Jason Gruss, "Human Male Sexual Response to Olfactory Stimuli", published in 1999. They measured blood flow in 31 men wearing scented masks, and lavender combined with pumpkin pie produced the largest increase, about 40 percent.
Before you reach for the spice cabinet, note that every odor they tested produced at least some increase. It was also a small group of men, and the study used food and household smells rather than perfumes. Treat it as a charming curiosity, not a rule.
Broader evidence favors vanilla. A 2022 study in Current Biology, led by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet, asked 235 people from nine very different communities to rank a set of odors. Vanilla came out as the most pleasant overall. Even so, personal taste explained more of the differences than the smell itself, so individual preference still wins.
Why the same perfume smells different on every woman
Perfume does not sit on top of your skin like a coat of paint. It mixes with your natural body odor. A 2012 PLoS ONE study by Lenochová and colleagues found that a person's odor blended with a perfume they chose was rated more pleasant than the same odor blended with a randomly assigned perfume.
In other words, people tend to pick scents that work with their own chemistry. This is why a friend's favorite can smell flat on you, and why trusting your own nose is not vanity. It is good science.
Do pheromone perfumes work on men?
There is no solid evidence that they do. A pheromone is a chemical signal that triggers a specific response in another member of the same species. A 2015 review in Proceedings of the Royal Society B by Oxford zoologist Tristram Wyatt found no robust evidence that the molecules sold as human pheromones actually act as pheromones.
Scent styles that work up close
Research cannot rank perfume families for attraction, so this part comes from the scent bar rather than the lab. These styles tend to read well at conversation distance, where attraction actually happens. (A note is one smell you can pick out in a perfume; the drydown is how it smells after an hour or more on skin.)
1. Soft vanilla and caramel
Given how widely vanilla is liked, a creamy gourmand, meaning a scent built on edible-smelling notes, is an easy crowd-pleaser. Giardini di Toscana Bianco Latte layers caramel and honey over vanilla and white musk, like warm milk and sugar on skin. See more in our vanilla collection.
2. Lavender with tonka
If the Hirsch study made you curious, lavender is far more wearable than it sounds when it is warmed with something sweet. Hellenist La Nuit des 300, composed by Maurice Roucel, sets lavender and tonka bean (a sweet, almond-and-hay smelling seed) over soft musks and patchouli.
3. Clean "skin" musks
Musk in modern perfume means soft, clean synthetic molecules that smell like warm, freshly washed skin. BDK Parfums 312 Saint-Honoré by Alexandra Carlin puts orange blossom, iris and tonka over white musk and ambroxan, polished and close to the skin. Browse our musk collection for more.
4. Fruity rose
A rose softened with fruit feels romantic without being old-fashioned. BDK Parfums Bouquet de Hongrie by Serge Majoullier opens with pear, blackcurrant and strawberry, then settles into Turkish rose and jasmine over musk, amber and cedar. The easiest way to choose between these four is to smell them side by side at our Somerville boutique, then wear your favorite for a full day. For evening picks, see our date night collection.
How to wear perfume so it helps, not hurts
Go easy. Since bad smells hurt attractiveness ratings more than good smells help, too much perfume is a bigger risk than too little. Two or three sprays on clean skin is plenty for most eau de parfums.
Test on skin, not paper. Because perfume blends with your own odor, wear a sample for a full day before buying a bottle. The drydown is what people will smell up close.
Choose what you love. The research keeps pointing back to personal preference. A scent that makes you feel like yourself will serve you better than any "most attractive" list, including this one.
Frequently asked questions
What scent is most attractive to men?
Research has not identified a single perfume note that attracts all men. Studies show that pleasant scents make faces look more attractive and unpleasant smells make them look less attractive, and that a perfume a woman chooses for herself tends to blend better with her own skin. Warm vanilla-type smells are among the most widely liked odors worldwide, so soft, warm scents are a safe place to start.
Do men actually notice a woman's perfume?
Yes, though smell is not the only thing they notice. In a 1997 questionnaire study of 332 adults, men rated sight and smell as roughly equally important when choosing a lover, while women put smell first. Lab studies also find that pleasant odors can raise attractiveness ratings of women's faces.
Is it true that men are attracted to the smell of pumpkin pie and lavender?
That idea comes from a small study by neurologist Alan Hirsch and Jason Gruss, published in 1999. It measured blood flow in 31 men wearing scented masks, and lavender combined with pumpkin pie produced the largest increase, about 40 percent. Every odor they tested produced some increase, so it is a fun finding rather than proof of a love potion.
Is vanilla perfume attractive to men?
Vanilla is one of the most broadly liked smells people know. A 2022 study across nine different communities worldwide found that vanilla was rated the most pleasant of the odors tested, regardless of culture. That does not make it irresistible, but it does make it an easy scent for most people to enjoy.
Do pheromone perfumes attract men?
There is no good evidence that they do. A 2015 review in Proceedings of the Royal Society B found no robust evidence that the steroid molecules usually sold as human pheromones actually work as pheromones. A perfume you love is a better bet than a pheromone claim.
Should I wear a sweet or a fresh perfume on a date?
Either can work, and no study ranks one above the other. Warm, sweet scents built on vanilla, tonka or musk tend to feel intimate in the evening and in cooler weather, while fresh citrus and light florals suit daytime and heat. Choose the one that smells best on your skin and that you feel good wearing.
How much perfume should I wear so a man notices it?
Aim to be noticed at close range, not across the room. Research suggests bad smells lower attractiveness ratings more strongly than good smells raise them, so too much perfume can do more harm than too little. Two or three sprays on clean skin is a good starting point for most eau de parfums.
