Redolia (reh-DOH-lee-uh) is a name we built from the English word redolent, which means two things at once: fragrant, and strongly reminiscent of something. That double meaning is exactly what perfume does, and it is why we chose it for our niche perfumery in Somerville, New Jersey.
Most shop names describe what is sold inside. We wanted a name that describes what happens when you find the right bottle: a scent that smells beautiful today and, years from now, brings this exact moment back.
What “redolent” means
Redolent has two meanings in English. The first is literal: strongly fragrant. A kitchen can be redolent of cinnamon; a garden can be redolent of jasmine after rain.
The second is figurative: strongly suggestive of something, evocative, reminiscent. An old street can be redolent of childhood summers. A song can be redolent of a year you had almost forgotten.
The word has been in English since around 1400, when it described flowers and food with a fresh, sweet scent. By 1700 it meant “smelling of” something, and by the early 1800s writers were using it for anything that calls up a memory or a mood. The word moved from the nose to the mind, which is the same journey a good perfume makes.
The Latin root: redolēre, “to give off a scent”

Redolent comes from the Latin verb redolēre, “to emit a scent.” It is built from red-, most likely an intensifier, and olēre, “to give off a smell.”
That same root, olēre, sits inside the Latin olfacere, “to sniff,” which gave English the word olfactory, the scientific term for everything to do with the sense of smell. In other words, Redolia is built on one of the oldest words people have for smelling.
Why a perfumery needs a word about memory

Smell is wired differently from the other senses. Signals from the nose travel to the olfactory bulb, which connects directly to the parts of the brain that handle emotion and memory, the amygdala and the hippocampus. Sight and sound take a longer route.
That is why a scent can return a moment faster and more completely than a photograph: a grandmother’s coat, a hotel lobby on a first trip abroad, the air on the morning of a wedding. You rarely decide to remember through smell. It simply happens.
Perfume is the one art form built to use that. When you choose a fragrance, you are not only choosing how you smell. You are choosing what your memories of this season will smell like. A perfumery should take that seriously, and the name is a promise that we will.
How to say Redolia

Redolia is pronounced reh-DOH-lee-uh, four syllables with the weight on the second. This is different from redolent itself, which English speakers stress on the first syllable (RED-uh-lent). We moved the emphasis to the long “O” because it opens the name up, the way a scent opens up on skin.
The line over the O

On our wordmark the name is written REDŌLIA, with a thin bar over the O. In dictionaries and pronunciation guides that mark, called a macron, signals a long vowel, and on our logo it marks the long “DOH” sound.
It has a second job, too. We drew it slightly finer than the letters and set it floating above the O, as a single line of scent rising from a bottle. It is the smallest detail on the sign outside the shop, and our favorite.
What the name means inside the shop

A name is only useful if it changes how you work. At Redolia it means three things.
- Every bottle earns its place. We carry more than twenty independent houses, chosen because each one makes something worth remembering. You can see the full list on our brands page.
- You smell before you decide. The scent bar in our Somerville boutique is built for slow sampling on skin, not rushed sprays on paper, because a perfume you will remember has to be worn first.
- We ask about moments, not just notes. The most useful question we can ask is not “do you like vanilla?” but “what do you want this year to smell like?” If you are shopping online, our perfume finder asks the same kind of question.

If you want to explore scent and memory for yourself, three notes are a good place to begin: rose, vanilla and oud.
