Description
What it smells like
Memo Paris Marfa is a floral-woody-musk eau de parfum built on tuberose, and it is the sunniest fragrance in the house's floral line. It opens on mandarin and peach — a soft, fuzzy, slightly nectar-like entry that reads as warm rather than citrus-sharp. The heart is the point: ylang-ylang, tuberose and orange blossom together, a full white-floral chord where the tuberose supplies creaminess and a faint green bite, the ylang adds banana-and-jasmine richness, and the orange blossom keeps it from turning waxy. The base is cedarwood, vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood and musk, which is what makes Marfa wearable rather than overwhelming — the woods dry the flowers out and the vanilla rounds the edges. Expect seven to nine hours, strong for the first two, then a soft creamy skin scent.
Named for the desert town in west Texas, it has that landscape's quality of heat and light rather than any literal desert note.
Who made it
Marfa was composed by Aliénor Massenet and released in 2016 in Memo's Fleurs Bohèmes line. Massenet wrote Lalibela, the first fragrance Memo released, and has worked with the house across some fifty compositions since.
Marfa is the clearest example of her structural habit: a loud, legible floral heart sitting on a long woody-vanilla base that holds the shape for hours. The gold label is by the artist Kimiko Kitamura.
Who it's for
This is for people who love tuberose and want it warm rather than cold. If you wear white florals and find the classic tuberose compositions either too green or too mentholated, Marfa is the sunlit version — the peach and vanilla soften it considerably without turning it into a dessert.
Within Memo it is the daylight counterpart to Odéon: both are florals from the same perfumer, but Odéon is a sugared rose for the evening while Marfa is a white floral for the afternoon. It is unisex on paper and leans feminine in wear, mostly because big tuberose still reads that way. If white florals give you a headache, nothing here will change your mind.
When to wear it
Marfa is a spring and summer fragrance that holds up into early autumn, and it crosses from day into evening more easily than most white florals because of the woody base. It suits dates, evenings out, romantic evenings and warm spring days — think a long lunch that turns into dinner.
Two to three sprays. It projects generously in heat, which is both the appeal and the risk: in a warm room one spray will do the work of three, and tuberose is not a note that rewards over-application.
About the house
Memo Paris was founded in Paris in 2007 by Clara Molloy and her husband John, and conceives each fragrance as a travel note — a place with a particular pull, built from intense raw materials and joined to the house's Carte de Tendre, its emotional map of the world. Every release carries both a perfumer credit and artwork by a named visual artist. Fleurs Bohèmes, the line Marfa belongs to, is where Memo keeps its florals. Marfa Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 75 ml bottle.
Fragrance Notes
What's the difference between accords and notes?
Accords are the overall scent families a fragrance gives off — its character at a glance. Notes are the individual ingredients you smell as it develops, from the first spritz (top) to the lasting dry-down (base).
