Sospiro

Sospiro Perfumes is the Italian house born out of the Xerjoff group in Turin, conceived as a creative laboratory where haute perfumery meets the language of music. The name is Italian for a sigh, and the structure follows through: compositions are titled and built like passages of sound, with tempo, voice and crescendo doing the work that flankers and numbers do at other houses.

The collection divides into distinct lines. Classica is the operatic core, full-throated and formal. Erba is the aromatic, brighter trio built around green and citrus signatures. Nero is the nocturnal end — darker woods, leather and resins meant for evening. Knowing which line a bottle belongs to tells you more about how it will wear than the note list does.

Under master perfumer Christian Provenzano and a roster of respected noses, Sospiro works with generous overdoses of costly raw materials: orris butter, oud, leather accords, amber, resins and rare florals. These are eau de parfum concentrations, but built densely enough that they behave like stronger formats, with the projection and eight-plus hour wear the house is known for. Bottles are weighty and sculptural, closer to objects than packaging.

Almost everything here is genuinely unisex — Italian perfumery has never been especially interested in dividing scent by gender, and Sospiro leans into that.
