ramon-monegal-matador
Ramon Monegal Matador Eau de Parfum

What it smells like

Ramon Monegal Matador is a floral-woody-musk eau de parfum that smells like the inside of a bullfighter's suit of lights: warm skin, dressing, silk and flowers, with something faintly dangerous underneath. It opens on rosewood, cumin and incense. Cumin is the note that decides whether you will love this or leave it — used carelessly it reads as sweat, used well it reads as warm human skin, and Monegal keeps it on the right side of that line by wrapping it immediately in rosewood's soft rosy timber and a thread of dry incense smoke.

The heart is a proper floral bouquet: jasmine, rose and magnolia. Magnolia is the lightest of the three and gives a lemony-creamy lift; jasmine supplies the indolic richness; rose is the connective tissue. Against the cumin still humming underneath, the effect is the leather-and-flowers contrast that Fragrantica's community reads as the fragrance's dominant accord even though there is no leather material listed in the pyramid.

The base is musk, coconut and sandalwood. The coconut is not tropical — it is the lactonic, slightly waxy sort that behaves like suede — and with sandalwood and musk it produces a drydown that is soft, creamy and very close to the body. Expect seven to nine hours with strong projection in the first two, then a persistent skin scent that lasts into the next day on fabric.

Who made it

Matador was composed by Ramon Monegal and released in 2025 as part of the house's Spanish collection, the series in which he works through his own country's imagery — Flamenco, Siesta, Olé, Bravo, Faïsa. The house motto for this one is "goosebumps are for the brave": a tribute to people who dare to smell victory before it is within reach.

It is presented in the same inkwell flacon as the rest of the line, here in a deep pink glass, with the gold-and-crimson outer tube that echoes the embroidery of a traje de luces.

Who it's for

This is for people who like skin scents with tension in them. If you wear cumin-forward or animalic florals, or if you enjoy leather fragrances but want one built from flowers instead of birch tar, Matador is worth your time. It is also a good entry point for anyone curious about Monegal's work, because it shows his habit of putting one potentially divisive material at the centre and then building comfort around it.

It is unisex with a slight masculine lean in the opening and a slight feminine lean in the heart. If cumin bothers you, skip it — there is no version of this fragrance without that first ten minutes. If you want something polite and office-safe, this is the wrong bottle.

When to wear it

Matador belongs to autumn and winter and to the evening. Cool air keeps the cumin in check and lets the sandalwood-coconut base bloom slowly; heat pushes the animalic side forward faster than most people want in public. It suits dinners, nights out, dates and occasions where you want to be remembered.

One or two sprays is genuinely enough. This is a fragrance with real projection for its first couple of hours, and over-applying is the most common way people end up disliking it. Applied to the chest under a shirt, it warms up gradually through the evening rather than arriving all at once.

About the house

Ramon Monegal is a Barcelona perfume house founded by the fourth generation of Spain's most important perfuming family. His great-grandfather's drugstore led to the founding of Myrurgia in 1916, and Ramon trained inside the family company from 1972 before studying with Artur Jordi Pey at Firmenich in Geneva, Marcel Carles in Grasse and Pierre Bourdon in Paris. He spent some thirty years as Myrurgia's in-house perfumer, and when the company was sold in 2000 he stepped away from corporate perfumery to work independently, launching his eponymous house later that decade. Literature is his stated inspiration after nature, which is why every fragrance is housed in the same faceted inkwell flacon with his monogram embossed on the flip-top cap: one vessel, many stories. Matador Eau de Parfum is available at Redolia Perfumery as a full 50 ml bottle.
